Lessons from Germany: How to overcome the fear of freeloaders

Romney’s most recent statement that Obama won by offering "gifts" to African-Americans, Hispanics and young voters reminds us all of his now infamous 47% comments. But it also reminds me of something else: the Republican fear of freeloaders.

Freeloaders, as conservatives view them, include many types of people, not just those who for example don’t have a disability but figure a way to get disability benefits. It also includes people who have a hard time finding a job and collect unemployment benefits. It includes low income women who have children they can’t take care of and collect welfare benefits, and many other people who get help from the government.

When I was fifteen I traveled from Peru, where I grew up, to Germany, to visit my godmother. I marveled at the sight of the clean and organized cities, perfectly build roads, bridges and buildings, [...]

Romney’s foot-in-mouth disease persists: Obama won by offering “gifts”

Romney needs to sign up for Obamacare and find a good doctor that cures him of a severe case of foot-in-mouth disease. We have seen it before, but we hoped not to hear or see any of it ever again. It's too embarrassing after such an embarrassing loss and all the other embarrassing statements we have heard from him. In a call with top campaign donors on Wednesday afternoon, Romney said that Obama won by offering "gifts" to African-Americans, Hispanics and young voters.

Now even Republicans have had it with the guy. Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana slams Romney for 'gifts' comment about minorities and young voters.

“I absolutely reject that notion,” Jindal, who was a surrogate for Romney’s campaign, said at the Republican Governors Association conference in Las Vegas. “I think that's absolutely wrong.”

When asked about Romney’s remarks, Jindal said [...]

In a self-defeating move, Romney brought up the 47% by lying about caring for the 100%

The question in the mind of Democrats and those who want to see president Obama reelected was: Will Obama mention Romney’s 47% quote? Will he go there? Democrats wanted to hear Obama talk about it. Well, he did! And it was another big lie by Romney that prompted Obama’s answer. Romney, trying to appear compassionate and caring, said, without being asked about it, that he “cares about the 100%”. What a moron! He dug his grave for the night!

Romney’s words from that secret video need to be repeated and people need to be reminded that it occurred during a campaign fundraiser with wealthy donors. People should not confuse Romney for someone who cares for all. He doesn’t:

There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, [...]

Could “Harvesting Companies” Become The New 47%?

As we said yesterday, it would be hard for Romney to out-do 47%, but today we have a contender anyway.  Courtesy of Mother Jones again (who else), we have a video of Mitt from 1985 describing the goal of Bain Capital being "harvesting" companies:

Mother Jones has obtained a video from 1985 in which Romney, describing Bain's formation, showed how he viewed the firm's mission. He explained that its goal was to identify potential and hidden value in companies, buy significant stakes in these businesses, and then "harvest them at a significant profit" within five to eight years.

In this clip, Romney mentioned that it would routinely take up to eight years to turn around a firm—though he now slams the president for failing to revive the entire US economy in half that time.

47% For 100% Of From Now Until November 6th

Did you think 47% was going away?  Perhaps, but only if Romney comes out with something even more truly awful. Here is the latest Obama ad consisting of nothing but Romney's words (and helpful imagery):
